The Rethinking Economics Festival 2020 will take place online from 22nd July – 26th July 2020.
2020 has so far been a year of upheaval. A pandemic keeps entire nations in lockdown, we are on track to yet another record-breaking year in terms of temperature, and disparities running along the fault lines of inequality, race and gender are coming to the fore around the world. Understanding the forces at play has never been more important.
The economic crisis of 2008 and the lack of tools to understand the world around us sparked the Rethinking Economics movement. Here we are in 2020 and very little has changed in our classrooms. Economists, current and aspiring, need to reflect on all of these issues, and more, at this pivotal moment. In order to showcase what economics could – and should – be, we are organising an online international festival. It will be a celebration of the diversity of ideas and approaches that can help us reform the present and reimagine the future.
Throughout the festival, we’ll be asking how we can harness the power of pluralism and diversity within and beyond economics to approach today’s issues, including how the discipline needs to reform. We’ll question how, through new ideas, tools and perspectives, we can envisage and emerge into a brighter world.
